Filtering Errors in Log Files
Filtering Errors in Log Files
When it comes to SAP Visualization Solutions by Nakisa (VSN), the log file is king. It is the source of information about all the transactions and activities carried out. In my first few weeks working with SAP VSN products I was quickly made aware of just how significant the CDS (Corporate Directory Services) log is and it is the foundation to solving at least a good 90% of issues encountered when configuring VSN applications.

SCN Contribution - Should I contribute to SCN
SCN Contribution - Should I contribute to SCN
A little under a year ago I joined the world of SAP. I’ve been working in IT for some time now in a wide variety of roles, but it is only relatively recently that I’ve entered into the mysterious and at times daunting world of SAP. Whilst I have experienced and helpful colleagues I can call upon for assistance they are not my only source of the latest SAP related information.

SCN Contribution - How can I contribute to SCN
In my first blog post in this series on contributing to SCN I wrote about making the decision to contribute to the SAP Community Network (SCN). In this blog post I’m going to take a look at some of the ways in which you can contribute to SCN. From what might qualify as a contribution, through to the different ways and mediums that SCN can allow you to create and publish your contributions. Finally we’ll take a look at some ideas for the sorts of things you might like to consider for your next or even first contribution.

If you’ve been following my previous posts on whether you should contribute to SCN and how you can contribute to SCN I would hope that by now you have made some sort of commitment to yourself that you will be adding some great content in the very near future. However there’s something I haven’t discussed yet and that’s about how much to contribute.

SCN Contribution - Improving contributions to SCN
Creating something new is one of the most rewarding things you can do and for the last few days I’ve been posting about why, what and how to do just that on the SAP Community Network (SCN). In this post I’m going to take a look at some examples of things we can all do to improve the content we see on SCN. Whilst it isn’t an exhaustive list by any means (that would be impossible) and whilst you may in fact do all of these things I hope there’s at least one thing in here that can help improve what we have.

I hope at least some of you have been following my posts of the last week about contributing to SCN. In this my final post in the series I thought I’d just wrap things up with a bit of a summary of what’s come before, some background to the series and something a little special that I hope all of you will take the opportunity to join in.

Quick Copy Evernote Note Links
Quick Copy Evernote Note Links
A little while back I was scanning through some questions on Quora when I spotted one relating to Evernote that I thought I could help with.  The question was “Is there a shortcut to copy the note URL in Evernote on Windows”….

AutoHotKey: Quick Access to Files and Folders
I’m a big fan of AutoHotKey a great scriptable automation tool for Windows and I use it for a number of things. One of these is to quickly access favourite files and folders.

Use AutoHotKey to create a daily folder
I spend a fair bit of my time checking the results of automated jobs over the course of a few days for different clients. As a result I frequently ended up creating temporary folders for several days in a row and naming them with the current date. After a few weeks the penny dropped and I decided to automate the process a little.

It was mainly this last factor that was the driver behind my particular recent use, but it really is amazing what can be done with such scripts and there are a lot of great resources out there that show you how to do some pretty incredible things.

Converting ZIP files to 7Z archive file using VBScript and 7-Zip
Whilst storage is continuing to get cheaper all the time I occasionally find myself needing to save some space. Usually where some cloud storage and archiving of old material is involved. ZIP files are very convenient for compressing files, but sometimes I need to go a step further. In these cases I opt for the 7z archive file format used in the free and portable software 7-Zip as I’ve always ended up with a smaller archive file.

VBScript to Convert Microsoft Office Files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to PDF
I spend a lot of my time working with Word documents and Excel spreadsheets - it’s in the nature of what I do. I frequently found that I need to create PDF copies of these files (to send out to clients) and eventually I grew tired of having to open the files one by one and select to save each as a PDF. As a result I created a bit of VBScript to automatically convert files for me (in Windows).

Stephen Millard - SAP Community Network Member of the Month 2013
2013 got off to a great start for me - I was selected from millions of people as the SAP Community Network’s Member of the Month. The SAP Community Network (SCN for short) is the online network for SAP professionals. It has well over two and a half million members and for one month only I’ve been highlighted as one of the community’s star members by being interviewed and having pride of place in the “MoM” corner on the SCN home page :-)

Audio Notifications in Alfred 2.0 Workflows
Since the beta release of Alfred 2.0 I’ve been working on several workflows that I’ll be sharing here (as well as in the Alfred 2.0 Beta Workflow forum). Some of these are practical workflows (such as Evernote Search+ which is still under development for version 1.1) and some are example workflows that I think might be of help to other Alfred workflow creators. Today I’m going to share a workflow that uses an audible notification at the end.

Today Nakisa formally launched their new OrgHub for Mobile application onto the Apple App Store. It seems every man and his dog seem to be developing mobile applications to serve up corporate data and services, so how does this new application stack up?

Transitioning Between 3.0 and 4.0 in Visualization Solutions by Nakisa
In November 2012 Nakisa released the latest version (4.0) of their visualization product suite and with it a number of changes to the availability of modules, nomenclature and licensing.  In this post I’m going to outline some of the importance of these changes in an attempt to try to help translate between versions for anyone who might be considering upgrading or applying unused existing licenses (shelf-ware).

How I’m Dealing with the Loss of Google Reader
How I’m Dealing with the Loss of Google Reader
As most of the Internet seems to have noticed, Google has plans to decommission Google Reader this coming July. This has caused quite a flurry of activity around RSS readers in general and there are numerous ideas, cloning projects and the like springing up. My approach to resolving this scenario however is a little different…

Notepad++ Workflow: Find Lines Not Containing
Notepad++ Workflow: Find Lines Not Containing
For some time now I’ve been using Notepad++ as my primary text editor. Given how much time I spend modifying configuration files, writing scripts and scouring log files its not exactly a surprise that I’ve come up with some nifty workflows for working with text in this editor. Whilst I do occasionally shift back to NoteTab Pro for its immensely useful scripting options I try and stay in Notepad++ as much as I can.

Using AutoHotKey and Greenshot for Sharing Screen Shots to a Shared Folder
In my work I regularly have need to take screen shots and to make the process of taking screen shots easier I use the open source utility Greenshot. I have Greenshot configured to not only copy the screen shot to the Windows clipboard, but also to save it to a screen shots directory.

Auto Incrementing in Excel
Auto Incrementing in Excel
In this post I’m going to share a tip about auto incrementing numbers in Excel. I’ve frequently found myself creating incremental number lists (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …, etc.) and whilst Excel is quite helpful at providing ways to create such lists I find its methods are often a bit limited for my needs - so I came up with another way that I think you might find more resilient.

Pythonista - Remote Command Execution
Pythonista is a Python based IDE for iOS and has formed the basis for finally getting around to teaching myself Python. I’m still in the earliest stages of getting to grips with Python but I thought I’d share one of my most useful scripts thus far. One to execute a remote command on a server using SSH.

Random Files Generator
Random Files Generator
Whilst doing some house keeping on some old VBScript files the other day I came across one for creating test files. I’ve blogged previously about creating test files using my MTF utility and whilst it or fsutil can be very useful, this script filled a particular niche. It was created as part of a test suite of scripts it creates multiple files of a specific size filled with random printable content.

Noteboard - A foldable pocket-sized whiteboard
Digital technology is a huge part of my life and who I am. I’m one of those people who actually finds it relative easy to read on a screen rather than having a preference for a paper book. So it’s unusual for me to find myself writing a blog post that is about something rather analogue - but it’s something I think fills a niche in the way I work and I expect could for you to. It is something brilliantly simple and fits in your pocket - a foldable whiteboard.

I have frequently found myself needing to add a link into a blog post for an existing web page where I’d like to link it as the page title. Rather than a couple of copy and paste actions I decided to create a TextExpander snippet to do the (not particularly) heavy lifting for me.
