Since we can't go to the beach and you shouldn't either, let's instead enjoy these French models living their best life in the 1996 @citroen Berlingo Coupé de Plage concept for today's Future Friday. Based on the standard Berlingo van, the Coupé de Plage (that means Beach Coupe) was created by Bertone as the ideal vehicle for young people on holiday. Instead of the regular van body this concept has an pickup bed with a tailgate, and as you can see from these truly spectacular photos it's more of an active lifestyle vehicle than any modern SUV marketed as such. A rollbar swings up out of the bed as a mount for surfboards or other long items, and there's storage compartments for things like flippers and oxygen tanks. Two beach chairs are mounted in the bed, perfect for lounging around with your bae and getting tan, and it's also got cupholders for your strawberry daiquiris and external speakers to play your beachy bangers. It sucks that we can't live out this '90s fantasy irl right now, but at least it gives us something to look forward to. I kept it until 2015 when I donated it to KPCC NPR in Los Angeles. The 1995 model was the only one that got the Gen 1 exterior with the Gen 2 dual airbag dashboard. Mine had an auxiliary switch mounted on the dash because the ECU was going bad, and it didn’t automatically turn on the radiator fan. I had to do it manually when the car started getting hot.".
