Clive Waye built these babies for like 10 years and in a couple of different versions. Waye happened to be a missile engineer who loved drag racing motorcycles and figuring out the optimal way to get traction and move out! Howard German is the guy sitting on the bike and he was the test pilot. The engine is a supercharged 1,200cc VW unit that was sleeved down to 980cc because of the rules. When they wanted to run against cars they would run the engine as a 1,450cc hammer. The slingshot driving position helped traction and the bikes ran low 10s at 140+. A design change in the late 60s where the rider basically sat over the tire brought 9-second, 150mph time slips. The thing was basically 13ft long and had the turning radius of a small ship but it was effective at going 1,320ft as quickly as possible.
